The evolution of our society has been that of increasing complexity, which can lead to individual dependence and an alienation due to a lack of identity. A study on the collapse of ancient civilizations, concluded that the societal structure evolved to the point where its complexity resulted in declining marginal return on investment. I prefer to look at investment as energy or effort rather than money. Our technology can be a major driver of complexity. The alternative to complexity is simplicity. We have a tendency to put too many societal demands first, rather than individual interests. The to-do list is upside down.
