The Industrial Revolution introduce a major change with the introduction of machines, factories, jobs, wages, division of labor, etc. The most significant change was mass production, which required mass consumption. This was a TOTAL change in society. We look at this change from two perspectives; a behavioral view and a structural view. The behavioral view is the belief that individual alienation (isolation, loss of identity) results in the behavioral patterns that leads to conformity to relieve the frustration. The drive for consumption is to satisfy every desire immediately, a desire fabricated for profit. The structural view comes to the same conclusion based on the structure of the economic system.
